A Taste of Colombia: Fifth Graders Explore Culture Through Fruit

Fifth-grade students at LLS recently learned about fruits from Colombia. As part of the unit, they participated in a juice tasting featuring fruits that are an important part of the country’s cultural heritage: guanábana (soursop), maracuyá (passion fruit), and guayaba (guava). During the tasting, students described each juice in Spanish and shared their opinions on the fruits' characteristics, including taste, texture, and color. 

Sports Day Wins the Vote!

Long Lots students demonstrated school spirit and civic pride by participating in a school-wide vote to choose the next spirit day theme. Sports Day came out on top and was celebrated on November 24th.

Long Lots Elementary School Breaks Ground on New Building

On Tuesday, October 14, the Long Lots School Building Committee (LLSBC) hosted a ceremonial groundbreaking to mark the start of construction on a brand-new Long Lots Elementary School. The event, held on the school’s campus at 4:30 p.m., drew roughly 100 attendees, including students, families, town and district officials, and community members—each eager to celebrate this important milestone for Westport Public Schools.

LLS Mission to Mars Makerspace

Long Lots fourth graders took on a hands-on STEM challenge inspired by visiting author Jasmine Warga’s A Rover’s Story! Using recycled materials and BeeBots, students designed, built, and coded their own Mars rovers—showcasing creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving as they explored the “surface of Mars.”

WPS Teacher of the Year Nominees

Congratulations to Ms. Julia Sanzo, LLS Kindergarten Teacher, and Ms. Kaitlyn Sullivan, LLS Grade 4 Teacher, on their nominations for WPS Teacher of the Year! Ms. Sanzo and Ms. Sullivan were recognized at last night's Board of Education meeting for their thoughtful, caring, and engaging teaching. Long Lots is appreciative of their commitment to inspiring a love of learning and making a lasting difference in the lives of their students.
